Black Friday and Orange Thursday

So, today is “Black Friday,” which retailers attempt to make the Biggest Shopping Day of the Year. (Online retailers have been grabbing for a piece of that pie as well with the relatively recently dubbed “Cyber Monday.”)

If today gets a color name, I think yesterday should too. I’m going with “Orange Thursday,” because really, aren’t most of the traditional Thanksgiving foods in the 590–620 nanometer range? Pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, turkey, gravy, stuffing…

We hosted Matthew’s family (including his sister in Texas via Skype!) and their significant others at our house. Everyone contributed to cooking for the meal or selecting wines. My favorite parts of the day were Dan (Matthew’s brother) explaining to Ricky (Joanna’s boyfriend) the entire plot of “While You Were Sleeping” (I got it on video!) and spinning the laptop around the table on our Lazy Susan so Amy could say hi to everyone. My favorite foods actually came after the mail meal, when we had a late supper of appetizers: cheese ball, stuffed mushrooms, and bacon-wrapped dates.

What (if anything) did you score at a sale today? What was on your plate yesterday?

    I’m not one to go out late or early to Black Friday sales, but I did luck out on some Christmas cards at cardstore.com. They happened to be having a BF sale; I got over 60 Christmas photo cards for 75%, free shipping, free postage for them – woohoo! I’ve been trying to avoid some of the sales because I know I’ll think, “I could really use that!”

    We were all at Dan and Jenn’s on Thanksgiving – a wonderful time! Everyone contributed and it was all so yummy. One of my favorites is a potato tart Laura makes all the time (apparently she flavors it with truffle butter). I made mashed potatoes in the crock pot and cranberry curd bars. We had an awesome time playing Taboo after dinner and dessert.

    THEN we had everyone over here yesterday for the kiddos’ birthday party. I made a train cake, cookies and other goodies. I’ve had way too much food in the past few days and I really need to get back on track! For some reason, whenever we have people over they start throwing stuff (Phil says it’s because we don’t have any rules); the highlight had to have been a wrapping paper fight and a game of Spoons.

    I made all the GF stuff:
    Banana oat muffins, homemade Nilla wafers, Chocolate chip cookies. And The Gravy (you know, so EVERYBODY– including me– could eat gravy at TG. Seems essential, somehow.)

    We were at my sis’s for the 2nd year in a row: combine house-size with electronic dishwasher & we’ve got a winning combination.

    In the evening we watched Swiss Family Robinson. First thing on land the mother kneels and the family with her (before the fade-to-black).

    “Oh to see Disney return to that,” said Kendie (the latest absorption to our family) wistfully.

    “You mean,to not speaking the name of God and making culturally specific movements that will mean nothing to those not familiar to them?” I asked her.

    “Way to kill it, Amy,” was her response.

    Gave me warm fuzzies. (This is when I question my NFness. If not deeply.) {Big grin}

    My other contribution to the movie experience was commenting on the irony of the brothers snarking on the “cabin boy’s” effeminate persona when the actor who played “Ernest” was later fired by Disney for being discovered out of the closet.

    Fun times.
    (Writing all that makes me feel weird. But coolish too; so it stands.)
